Chihuahuas are the smallest breed, and that's exactly the problem: tiny bodies mean small amounts of extra food translate into a big percentage of weight gain, and treats or table scraps add up fast.
Ideal weight
| Type | Ideal range |
|---|---|
| Standard | 1.8–2.7 kg (4–6 lb) |
Small dog, big margins. Because a Chihuahua may weigh just 2 kg, a single extra 100 g is like a person gaining several kilos. Owners often overfeed toy breeds with treats and human food without realising the scale. Excess weight also worsens the patellar (kneecap) and dental problems these little dogs are prone to.
How to tell if your pet is overweight
- Feel for the ribs. Lay both hands flat on the ribcage; you should feel ribs easily under a thin layer without pressing.
- Look from above. There should be a clear waist tucking in behind the ribs; a straight or bulging outline means no waist.
- Check the side profile. The belly should tuck up behind the ribcage rather than hang level.
What to do about it
- Weigh the food, don't scoop it. Eyeballing portions is the most common cause of overfeeding.
- Count treats as calories — keep them under 10% of daily intake; swap biscuits for carrot or green bean.
- Build up daily activity gradually, switching to low-impact options like swimming if joints are sore.
- Watch the human food. Scraps that seem tiny to you are huge for a 2 kg dog.
- Reweigh monthly. Safe loss is about 1–2% of body weight per week; involve your vet for an overweight pet.

How much should a Chihuahua weigh?
Typically 1.8–2.7 kg (4–6 lb); some are larger.
Why does a little weight matter so much?
At around 2 kg, even 100–200 g extra is a large percentage of body weight and strains small joints.
Is my Chihuahua fat or just small?
Feel for ribs and a slight waist; a small dog can still be overweight if ribs are buried.
