Maine Coons are among the largest domestic cats, with big frames and coats to match, and they mature slowly — up to four or five years. All of that makes weight hard to judge by numbers alone.
Ideal weight
| Sex | Ideal range |
|---|---|
| Male | 5.9–8.2 kg (13–18 lb) |
| Female | 4.5–6.8 kg (10–15 lb) |
Big frame vs. big belly. A Maine Coon can healthily weigh what would be obese in another cat, so the scale misleads. The tell is feel, not size: run your hands over the ribs and check for a waist. A large but lean Coon has findable ribs and a defined shape; a fat one is rounded with buried ribs. They also have the normal primordial belly pouch.
How to tell if your pet is overweight
- Feel for the ribs. Lay both hands flat on the ribcage; you should feel ribs easily under a thin layer without pressing.
- Look from above. There should be a clear waist tucking in behind the ribs; a straight or bulging outline means no waist.
- Check the side profile. The belly should tuck up behind the ribcage rather than hang level.
What to do about it
- Weigh the food, don't scoop it. Eyeballing portions is the most common cause of overfeeding.
- Count treats as calories — keep them under 10% of daily intake; swap biscuits for carrot or green bean.
- Build up daily activity gradually, switching to low-impact options like swimming if joints are sore.
- Go slow with cats. Rapid loss risks fatty liver disease — involve your vet.
- Reweigh monthly. Safe loss is about 1–2% of body weight per week; involve your vet for an overweight pet.

How much should a Maine Coon weigh?
Males 5.9–8.2 kg (13–18 lb), females 4.5–6.8 kg (10–15 lb); some larger.
Is my Maine Coon big or fat?
Feel for ribs and a waist rather than reading the scale — a lean Coon is large but defined.
Why is my Maine Coon still growing?
They mature slowly, often up to 4–5 years, so young Coons keep filling out.
