Is my Rottweiler overweight?

A Rottweiler's muscle can hide fat — and on a breed prone to joint trouble, the extra load matters.

Rottweilers are large, powerful working dogs. Their muscular build can mask weight gain, and without enough exercise they gain readily — which strains joints already prone to problems.

Male43–61 kg (95–135 lb)
Female36–48 kg (80–100 lb)

Muscle can hide the fat. A Rottweiler's bulk makes the eye test unreliable — go by feel. This breed is prone to hip and elbow dysplasia and cruciate ligament injuries, and every extra kilo accelerates joint wear on an already heavy frame. A working Rottie needs a job as much as a diet.

Is my Rottweiler muscular or fat?

Feel for ribs through the muscle; buried ribs and no waist mean weight rather than build.
